Research on the Sociology of Technology

I presently have several research projects on the use of computer technologies in Canadian higher education. These projects are funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Technology Use by Canadian Post-Secondary Students

This research project looks at the use of computer technologies by post-secondary students. The major component of this research is a survey of student computer use at several Canadian universities and colleges. This survey has been conducted 10 times. The samples are large with a total of approximately 7,400 cases overall. This research is being conducted as part of SSHRC funded Network for the Evaluation of Education and Training Technologies (EvNet).

The findings from this survey are being made available in a comprehensive fashion on this web site.

Technology Use by Canadian Post-Secondary Faculty

I am also engaged in a study of the faculty use of technology. This study is also funded as part of EvNet. Like the student study the major component of this research is a survey. This survey has been conducted at six institutions.

The web site for this project follows has a similar structure as the student technology site. Construction on this site is not as advanced.

Technology Policy and Practice in Canadian Higher Education (Campus Computing Canada)

This is a survey of the technology policies and practices at Canadian higher education institutions. The study is composed of eight related surveys of various aspects of information technology policies and practices. The study has had responses from 138 institutions across Canada. Findings from this study will be published on the web and elsewhere beginning in the summer of 2001.

This project is funded with $105,000 under the SSHRC general research program. I am co-investigator on this research with Carl Cuneo of McMaster University.
